Known as the “LAND OF WATERFALLS,” the municipality is situated on sedimentary rocks of marine origin, responsible for the formation of waterfalls, caves, grottos, and cliffs. The region contains archaeological sites over two thousand years old, and is also home to indigenous peoples such as the Waimiri-Atroari, whose territory occupies approximately 33% of the municipality. Crisscrossed by streams, it is ideal for ecotourism, birdwatching (including the rare and exuberant cock-of-the-rock), and sport fishing, with the lake formed by the Balbina hydroelectric dam being a favorite spot.
